Why Do My Eyes Still Look Tired? Dryness, Puffiness, Dark Circles and Tear Troughs Are Not the Same Problem

Why Do My Eyes Still Look Tired? Dryness, Puffiness, Dark Circles and Tear Troughs Are Not the Same Problem
You may sleep well, drink water and use an eye cream—yet still feel that your eyes look tired.
The reason is simple: “tired-looking eyes” is not one condition. It may come from dehydration, temporary puffiness, pigmentation, visible blood vessels, volume loss, eye bags or several of these at the same time.
Because the causes are different, the same eye mask or facial cannot solve every concern.
A Quick Guide to Tired-Looking Eyes
| What you notice | Possible cause | What may help |
|---|---|---|
| Fine, crinkly surface lines | Dryness or dehydration | Gentle skincare, hydration and Eye Care |
| Worse in the morning or after flying | Temporary fluid retention | Cool compress, sleep, allergy management and selected de-puffing care |
| Brown or grey discoloration | Pigmentation, rubbing or sun exposure | Sun protection and cause-specific assessment |
| Blue or purple tone | Thin skin and visible blood vessels | Skin-quality assessment; camouflage may still be needed |
| A hollow shadow below the eye | Tear trough or facial-volume loss | Structural assessment—not simply hydration |
| A raised bag below the eye | Fat-pad prominence or persistent swelling | Medical assessment; facials have limited effects |
| Lines that deepen when smiling | Muscle movement and skin aging | Conservative Botox or collagen assessment when appropriate |
The same person may have two or three of these concerns together.
1. Dryness and Dehydration
The eyelid area has particularly thin, delicate skin. It can become dry because of:
Air conditioning or indoor heating
Long-haul flights
Low humidity
Harsh cleansers
Retinol or acid products applied too close to the eyes
Makeup removal
Eczema or contact irritation
Rubbing the eyes
Dehydrated skin may look dull, creased or “papery.” Fine lines can become much more visible even when there has been no major structural aging.
Hydration can make this area look smoother and more comfortable, but it cannot remove a true tear trough or an eye bag.
What may help
A gentle, fragrance-free eye moisturizer
Ceramides, glycerin or hyaluronic acid
Avoiding aggressive acids and scrubs around the eyes
Daily sunscreen and sunglasses
Professional Guinot Eye Care or Deep Hydrating when appropriate
If the eyelids are persistently red, itchy, swollen or flaky, the problem may be dermatitis rather than ordinary dryness. The AAD notes that eczema can affect the eyelids and may cause itchy, red or swollen eyes. American Academy of Dermatology
2. Puffiness
Puffiness is usually a raised or swollen appearance rather than a dark hollow.
Common contributors include:
Fluid retention
Lack of sleep
Allergies
Crying
High salt or alcohol intake
Long flights
Sleeping position
Genetics
Age-related weakening of the tissues around the eyes
Temporary puffiness is often worse in the morning and improves during the day. Persistent bags caused by fat-pad prominence usually do not disappear after massage or a facial.
Johns Hopkins notes that under-eye puffiness can be associated with aging, genetics, allergies, fluid retention and lifestyle factors such as salt intake. Johns Hopkins Medicine
What may help
A cool compress
Adequate sleep
Managing known allergies
Moderating salt and alcohol before an important event
V-Plus or selected facial care for temporary facial puffiness
Medical or surgical assessment for prominent, persistent eye bags
A de-puffing treatment may make the face look fresher temporarily, but it cannot permanently remove structural fat pads.
3. Dark Circles
Dark circles are not always caused by tiredness. Mayo Clinic lists several possible contributors, including genetics, aging, sun exposure, eczema, contact dermatitis, eye rubbing and changes in skin pigmentation. What appears to be a dark circle may also be a shadow created by puffiness or a hollow tear trough. Mayo Clinic
Dark circles can be broadly divided into several types.
Pigmented dark circles
These may look brown, grey or uneven and can be influenced by:
Genetics
Sun exposure
Previous irritation
Eczema
Frequent rubbing
Post-inflammatory pigmentation
Vascular dark circles
Thin skin can allow blue, purple or reddish vessels to show through more clearly. This may be more noticeable when someone is tired or dehydrated.
Shadow-based dark circles
Sometimes the skin is not significantly darker. The “circle” is a shadow created by:
Tear-trough hollowing
Cheek-volume loss
Prominent eye bags
Facial anatomy
Overhead lighting
Brightening creams cannot correct an anatomical shadow. This is why identifying the type of dark circle matters before selecting treatment.
4. Tear Troughs
A tear trough is a groove extending from the inner corner of the eye toward the upper cheek.
It may become more visible because of:
Natural facial anatomy
Genetics
Aging
Facial-fat redistribution
Bone and ligament changes
Significant weight loss
GLP-1-associated weight change
A tear trough often looks like a dark circle because it casts a shadow. It does not necessarily mean that the skin is pigmented.
Hydrating treatments may improve the surface quality of the skin, but they cannot fully replace missing structural support.
Under-eye filler may suit selected clients, but this is a technically sensitive area. Filler is not appropriate for everyone—particularly people with significant puffiness, prominent eye bags or a tendency to retain fluid. Conservative assessment is essential.
5. Eye Bags Are Not Tear Troughs
A tear trough is a depression. An eye bag is a projection.
Treating a bag as if it were a hollow may make the area look heavier. Similarly, repeatedly massaging a structural fat pad will not make it disappear.
Mayo Clinic explains that under-eye bags become more common as the supporting tissues around the eyes weaken with age. For significant structural bags, blepharoplasty may be considered after medical assessment. Mayo Clinic
Non-surgical treatments may improve skin quality around an eye bag, but they should not be presented as equivalent to surgery.
Which PA BEAUTY Treatment May Fit?
Guinot Eye Care
This may suit clients whose main concerns are:
Dryness
Temporary tiredness
Fine dehydration lines
Mild puffiness
Relaxation before an event
It is a gentle, low-downtime option, particularly after travel.
Deep Clean + Deep Hydrating + Eye Care
This combination may be useful when tired-looking eyes occur alongside:
Overall facial dehydration
Dullness
Congestion
Post-flight skin
Makeup sitting unevenly
Deep Clean should still be adjusted to the client’s barrier condition. More cleansing is not helpful when the skin is already irritated.
V-Plus Face Lifting
V-Plus may temporarily improve facial freshness and definition when puffiness is contributing to a tired appearance.
It cannot remove structural eye bags or restore a deep tear trough.
Type III Collagen Rejuvenation
A collagen-support treatment may be considered for:
Fine texture
Early crepiness
Reduced skin resilience
General skin-quality concerns
Collagen remodeling is gradual. It should not be described as an instant replacement for lost under-eye volume.
Exosome + PDRN + Hyaluronic Acid
A selected skin-quality treatment may support:
Hydration
Fine surface lines
Dullness
Texture
Overall skin recovery
PA BEAUTY’s mesotherapy protocol is performed in a sterile, comfortable and virtually painless process. Most clients experience only mild redness or swelling, generally settling within approximately one day. Individual responses can still vary.
Mesotherapy cannot remove a structural eye bag or reliably replace significant tear-trough volume.
Botox
Conservative Botox may help selected lines caused by muscle movement, such as crow’s feet.
It does not treat pigmentation, dehydration, tear troughs or eye bags. Placement and dose must be carefully adapted to the individual’s anatomy and existing tissue support.
What About Eye Patches and Eye Creams?
Eye patches may temporarily improve:
Hydration
Cooling
Mild morning puffiness
Fine dehydration lines
Caffeine-containing products may temporarily make puffiness look less noticeable. Retinoids may support long-term skin texture when carefully selected and tolerated.
However, topical products cannot fully correct:
Deep tear troughs
Significant volume loss
Structural fat pads
Advanced loose skin
Medical causes of persistent swelling
A product containing PDRN, collagen or hyaluronic acid does not automatically create the same effect as a professional treatment. The concentration, formulation and delivery depth are different.
Tired Eyes After a Long-Haul Flight
International travellers arriving in Beijing may notice:
Dry, tight eye-area skin
Temporary puffiness
Dullness
Makeup settling into fine lines
More visible under-eye shadows
For a short visit, a gentle hydrating facial and Eye Care may be more practical than starting an aggressive treatment with uncertain recovery.
If considering mesotherapy, allow time for possible mild redness or swelling, even though PA BEAUTY clients generally recover within approximately one day.
Do not schedule a first-time invasive treatment immediately before an important photoshoot, wedding or flight.
When Should You See a Doctor?
Seek medical assessment if swelling:
Appears suddenly or severely
Affects only one side and becomes worse
Is painful, hot or red
Is accompanied by a rash
Causes vision changes
Occurs with a severe headache
Makes it difficult to open the eye
Persists without a clear explanation
Under-eye bags are usually harmless, but Mayo Clinic recommends medical evaluation when they occur with vision problems, irritation, headaches or a skin rash. Mayo Clinic
Eye-Area Assessment at PA BEAUTY Beijing
At PA BEAUTY, we first identify whether the tired appearance is mainly related to:
Dehydration
Temporary puffiness
Pigmentation
Visible vessels
Fine skin-quality lines
Muscle movement
Tear-trough hollowing
Structural eye bags
The goal is not to sell every client the same “eye treatment.” It is to choose an appropriate level of care—and to explain honestly when a facial or skin-quality treatment has limits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can drinking more water remove dark circles?
It may help if dehydration is making the area look worse, but it cannot remove genetic pigmentation, visible vessels, tear troughs or eye bags.
Can an eye facial fix a tear trough?
No. Eye Care can improve hydration, comfort and temporary freshness, but a tear trough is primarily a structural hollow.
Why are my eyes puffier after flying?
Cabin dryness, disrupted sleep, salt, alcohol, allergies and temporary fluid retention may contribute.
Is filler always the best treatment for tear troughs?
No. Some clients are not suitable because of puffiness, eye bags, skin laxity or anatomy. A conservative structural assessment is required.
How soon before an event should I book Eye Care?
A gentle Eye Care or hydrating facial can often be booked shortly before an event, but first-time clients may prefer to allow several days in case of sensitivity.
Can mesotherapy help tired-looking eyes?
It may support hydration and fine skin quality in suitable clients. It cannot remove structural eye bags or replace substantial missing volume.
